India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology Has Cut the Deadline for Social Media Platforms to Remove Unlawful Information

The revised IT rules, amended in February, also require intermediaries to ensure clear labelling and traceable metadata for AI-generated content so users can easily identify synthetic material and prevent deception or misuse. The guidelines mandate prompt action against child sexual exploitation material, non-consensual intimate imagery, impersonation, and other harmful AI-generated content. Significant Social Media Intermediaries (SSMIs) must deploy automated tools to proactively identify content depicting rape, child sexual abuse, or content identical to previously removed material.
