ICCT Efficiency Study Ranks Tata Highest, Tesla 79, BYD 69

The ICCT measured energy consumption in watt-hours per kilometre, adjusted for vehicle weight, with lower figures indicating better efficiency. Tata scored 100, the highest among 22 automakers, while Mahindra scored 89; Tesla scored 79 and BYD 69. However, the report noted this does not mean they build the best EVs overall, as factors like range, charging speed, and sales share matter. On broader measures, Tata ranked 15th overall with a score of 33, and Mahindra tied for 17th with 30. The report evaluated six major markets, including India for the first time, which together account for over 90% of global EV sales.

Tesla topped the overall rankings with 83, and BYD was second with 72. Tata was placed at the bottom of the "Transitioners" category, while Mahindra was classified as a "Laggard. Social media users reacted negatively, with one quipping, "This is like comparing a Ferrari to a Maruti Alto and saying the Alto is more efficient.
