AI Cheating in Upper Secondary Schools, Requiring Students Aged 16 to 19 to Orally Defend Their Written Essays and Allowing Schools

Education Minister Magnus Heunicke said on Thursday, as pupils prepare to return to school next week, that "action is needed now" to address the problem. The measures, effective immediately, include oral defences for the roughly 9,000 students who annually complete the major written assignment (SSO), mandatory monitoring tools and firewalls during exams, and a push for more in-school written work under controlled conditions. The government is also developing a national AI strategy for education.

In neighboring Sweden, suspensions or warnings for unauthorized AI use rose 688% between 2023 and 2025, prompting a government review due in April. Swedish minister Lotta Edholm said in January: Cheating is completely unacceptable regardless of what form.
