Anthropic Forms In-house Team to Design Custom AI Chips for Claude Models
Anthropic has announced it is forming an in-house team to design custom AI chips for its Claude models, aiming to overcome the global hardware supply crunch and boost processing power. The company said it has hired engineers with expertise in both hardware and software to develop the chips alongside software components. The move does not end its existing hardware partnerships; Anthropic described it as the latest step in a multi-chip strategy, continuing to use infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, Nvidia, and AMD.
No timeline for the chips' market debut was given, nor details on whether Anthropic will handle fabrication itself. Industry sources note that designing an advanced AI processor from scratch can cost up to $500 million, driven by hiring skilled hardware engineers and preventing manufacturing defects in the foundry stage. Whether the effort proves worthwhile for Anthropic remains to be seen.
