Greater Manchester Has Terminated the Contract of Its Embattled Vice-chancellor, Sir George Holmes, Ending Months of Uncertainty

Staff and students were informed on Wednesday afternoon that Holmes, who led the university for two decades, was no longer employed. The university, formerly known as the University of Bolton, said Holmes's employment ended earlier this week following his suspension in May last year over allegations of financial mismanagement and other misconduct. The move came after investigations by Manchester's the Mill revealed whistleblower allegations of bullying, racism, and fraud.

Phil Brickell, MP for Bolton West, welcomed the decision, urging the university to restore confidence and focus on students and staff. Acting vice-chancellor Greg Walker will remain in place while the governing body considers appointing a permanent head. Greater Manchester police are investigating suspected fraud and bribery, having arrested three people in July over alleged fraudulent activity exceeding £1m between 2014 and 2025. All three were released on bail without charge.

Dr George Holmes’s contract as vice-chancellor has been ended by the governing body of the university. Dr Holmes is therefore no longer an employee of the university.
