Bangladesh's Current Authorities Have Rejected Accusations of Widespread Political Persecution

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, warned Wednesday in New Delhi that Bangladesh could become "another Pakistan" on India's eastern side unless its deteriorating security situation is addressed. Speaking at an event organized by the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Joy, a senior Awami League figure, alleged that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and other foreign agencies have gained increased influence in Bangladesh, and that militant groups are becoming more visible. He claimed convicted militants had been released from prison, banned groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir were operating openly, and individuals linked to al-Qaeda had appeared at public events.

Joy also criticized the political environment, alleging arrests and intimidation of Awami League supporters, journalists, and former officials, and disputed official casualty figures from the 2024 protests that led to Hasina's ouster. Bangladesh's current authorities have rejected accusations of widespread political persecution. India has closely monitored developments due to concerns over border security, migration, trade, and potential extremist expansion.
