El-sayed Wins Michigan Democratic Senate Primary

The win, over centrist Rep. Haley Stevens, who had backing from Democratic heavyweights and big-money donors, was not the resounding triumph his campaign predicted after touting a "massive" polling lead. El-Sayed, who champions Medicare-for-all and ending military aid to Israel, appeared to struggle in some of Michigan's lower-income and less-educated districts.

The general election will test whether a left-wing populist can win over swing-state voters in a state that backed Trump in two of the past three presidential elections. Winning Michigan as a Democrat requires a coalition of Black Detroiters, suburban swing voters, college-town progressives, blue-collar union workers, and Jewish and Muslim Americans. Michigan is like a microcosm of America, one Detroit reporter said.

Progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have rallied behind El-Sayed, while moderate Democrats worry his platform could alienate independents in the general election.
