Google Cited Security, Ease of Use, and More Efficient Use of Maintenance Resources As Reasons for the Removal

Google announced that starting January 2027, Gmail will remove the "Send mail as" feature for third-party email addresses, along with Gmailify and POP support for fetching third-party emails. The change, detailed in Google's official Gmail support page, affects users who send messages via Gmail using addresses from Yahoo, Outlook, Hotmail, or custom domains. Google cited security, ease of use, and more efficient use of maintenance resources as reasons for the removal.

After January 2027, users won't be able to add new third-party accounts to Gmail's web interface or sync existing ones. However, an exception exists for mobile apps: on Android and iOS, users can still view inboxes of third-party accounts but cannot send emails using those addresses through the Gmail app. Aliases between Gmail addresses and the "Send mail as" function in Google Workspace accounts remain unaffected.
