Spider-man: Brand New Day Grosses Over $1Bn, Drawing Gen Z Audiences

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the Marvel sequel reuniting Tom Holland and Zendaya, has grossed over $1bn since its Friday opening, with 36 per cent of ticket sales from adults aged 18 to 24, challenging the notion that Gen Z avoids cinemas.
The film follows Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in drawing large audiences. Recent hits like horror films Backrooms, which made nearly $400m with 85 per cent of its audience under 35, and Obsession, made on a $750,000 budget and earning over $470m with 75 per cent of its opening audience aged 18 to 25, also attracted young viewers. Directors Curry Barker, 26, and Kane Parsons, 21, both Gen Z and former YouTubers, helmed those films, with Parsons becoming the youngest filmmaker to top the US box office. The Drama, starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, earned nearly five times its $28m budget, with 80 per cent of its audience under 35. Industry figures like Reece Witherspoon had claimed teenagers don't go to the movies, but studios are now eyeing Gen Z fans as a key market.
