UK Tribunal Rules Bristol Lecturer's Dismissal Was Unlawful Discrimination

Miller, who taught political sociology at Bristol since 2018, had described some Jewish student groups as "political lobby groups" and opposed "Jewish students on British campuses being used as political pawns by a violent, racist foreign regime engaged in ethnic cleansing. A February 2024 tribunal had already ruled his dismissal unfair, but the university appealed. The latest ruling implicitly confirms anti-Zionism does not equate to anti-Semitism under British law.

Miller told Al Jazeera the victory will encourage others to speak out against Zionism, noting a "pressure campaign from external Zionist organisations and Zionist student organisations" led to his dismissal and that his case had fueled self-censorship among academics. He hopes the ruling will prompt more academics to "speak the truth about the genocide in the Levant and be more critical of Zionism as an ideology.
