Iran Had Previously Begun Talks With Oman, Which Also Borders the Strait, to Establish Safe Transit Routes

Iran announced that it has reached an agreement with Oman on the geographic coordinates of a route to ensure safe passage for commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iranian state television, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said the technical, legal, security, and environmental aspects of the route were examined in detail by Iran's relevant institutions. Baghaei noted that the two countries have agreed on the coordinates, and if third parties do not obstruct the process, a joint statement containing the key points of the agreement is in the final review and drafting stage.

He added that the agreement alone will not make the strait safe for ships, citing ongoing security risks due to U.S. interventions. Iran had previously begun talks with Oman, which also borders the strait, to establish safe transit routes.
