Virginia, Kansas, and Missouri Set the Stage for November's Midterms, With Progressive Candidates Showing Strength But Facing Limits

In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic Senate primary over moderate Haley Stevens, 48.5% to 47.5%, despite polls predicting a blowout. Republicans nominated former congressman Mike Rogers. Progressives also celebrated victories in Michigan's 7th district, where Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence won the Democratic nod, and in Detroit, where Donavan McKinney ousted Congressman Shri Thanedar.

However, in Missouri, incumbent Wesley Bell easily defeated progressive challenger Cori Bush, who received under 40% of the vote. In Washington, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez won her primary. Missouri voters rejected a GOP-backed ballot measure to make constitutional amendments harder to pass by an 80% margin, along with an income tax phase-out.

Kansas voters turned back a Republican attempt to elect state supreme court judges. The results highlight divisions among Democrats over the party's direction, with El-Sayed and Lawrence needing to court centrist voters ahead of the general election.
