Live Sports Aren't Just a Viewership Play, They're a Fan Engagement

Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro said Wednesday that Disney+ will feature more live sports, starting with additional college football simulcasts this fall, as the company makes the platform the hub for its direct-to-consumer business. During the quarterly earnings call, D'Amaro and CFO Hugh Johnston outlined plans to bring select premium sports events to Disney+, citing ESPN's most-watched fiscal Q3 in a decade, driven by the NBA Finals and the NHL's Stanley Cup Final. "Live sports aren't just a viewership play, they're a fan engagement and ecosystem play, D'Amaro said.
Johnston added that the strategy aims to drive upsells into Disney+, Hulu, and the ESPN Unlimited bundle. D'Amaro also noted that industry consolidation, such as Comcast's NBC Universal spin-off and Fox's Roku acquisition, could present opportunities for Disney. "A more consolidated industry is a better investment backdrop, he said, emphasizing Disney's bundling advantage in improving customer retention.
