A 27-year-old man suffered third-degree burns from hot sand after using a disposable barbecue on Cefn Sidan Beach in Carmarthenshire, Wales. Sam Knight stepped on sand that remained hot after he moved the barbecue and extinguished it, and had to be carried off the beach. He was taken to Neath Port Talbot Hospital and referred to a burns specialist, and couldn't walk for two weeks, requiring a fortnight off work.

Experts at Swansea Bay University Health Board's burns centre say such injuries are becoming increasingly common, with physiotherapist David Fligelstone noting incidents are "going up year on year" because sand stays hot long after a barbecue is moved. Knight told Radio Wales Breakfast he wasn't aware sand could be a "real hazard" and later conducted an experiment showing raising the barbecue from the sand kept it closer to ambient temperature. The health board recommends using stones, bricks, or a dedicated stand to prevent heat transfer, and disposing of used barbecues in designated hot-ash bins or taking them home.
