Hardware Store Salesman Jailed for Groping Student on Bus

A hardware store salesman was jailed for four months on Tuesday for groping a 15-year-old student on a bus in Mong Kok.

William Wu, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault in West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts. The court heard that on June 8, Wu touched the underarm of a Secondary Form three girl from behind on the upper deck of a bus on Mong Kok Road. CCTV footage showed the girl trying to move away, but Wu continued.

Wu had three prior convictions for sexual offences and was willing to undergo psychological treatment. He had left Hong Kong after the assault and was arrested upon re-entering from mainland China at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. Principal Magistrate Don So sentenced him to four months, noting his guilty plea and willingness for treatment.

The victim, who was heading home from classes, did not immediately report the incident out of fear. Hong Kong has proposed overhauling its sex crime laws, which date mostly to the 1970s, to introduce new offences, expand the definition of rape, and redefine consent. Rights groups have urged the government to add an offence for persistent child sexual abuse and to rule out the defence of 'honest but mistaken belief' in sexual assault cases.
