South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Reported Deliberate Fire Setting Overnight Monday

Firefighters have been battling a wildfire on Llanwonno mountain in the Rhondda Valley since Saturday, with authorities suspecting it was deliberately started. The blaze, near Ferndale, began Saturday afternoon and remains a major incident due to challenging conditions including low cloud, mist, and rain. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported "deliberate fire setting" overnight Monday.

No evacuations have been ordered, but a rest centre is open for residents concerned about poor air quality. Resident Caryl Holmes said the fire came close to her daughter's home, calling it very frightening. Another resident, Ian Putland, found ash on his car and expressed frustration over the deliberate fires, citing wildlife deaths and wasted emergency resources.

Area manager Christian Hadfield said crews have been on scene since Saturday, with fire breaks being installed, and a specialist helicopter was secured but couldn't fly due to weather. Road closures remain, and police are seeking information.
