Red Hat CTO: Indian Engineers Shifting From Open-source Adopters to Contributors in AI Era

Indian engineers are increasingly contributing to the open-source technologies underpinning artificial intelligence, moving beyond their historical role as adopters to become active contributors, according to Vincent Caldeira, CTO for APAC at Red Hat. "AI has already been widely adopted across the globe, and is one of the most proven use cases that enterprises are willing to invest in to increase the pace of their delivery. This is relevant to India because of the scale of software development here, not just for Indian companies, but also globally," he said.

Caldeira noted that India has historically benefited from its software-development skills and has been a major adopter of open-source technology, but has not always been a major contributor to open-source communities. India had largely focused on building development capacity for the rest of the world, with an emphasis on efficiency and building more business applications. He pointed to PyTorch as an example of this change. PyTorch is a foundation of modern AI, and Red Hat's AI projects, including vision-language models (VLM), rely heavily on PyTorch libraries.
