Crane Chick Rescued From Sheep Fence Outside Rörvik

The bird had become entangled with one leg in the fence and could have ended badly if Mats Nyberg had not come along. Nyberg, a forest consultant, made the unusual discovery in the woods outside Rörvik, in the Nya Hjälmsryd area. "I work as a forest consultant and was out with a landowner to look at the forest, he says.

Already on the way there, he noticed that something seemed wrong. "I saw that it was a crane that looked like it had gotten stuck, but I first thought it would get loose on its own, Nyberg says. When he looked closer, he saw the young crane was caught in a sheep fence.

"The legs had gotten between the wires and the bird had spun around half a turn. The wires had wrapped around its legs so it couldn't get free. Nyberg decided to help the bird.

"It felt great to be able to release it, he says. Once the crane was free, it appeared to have survived without serious injuries. "I absolutely think it will make it.

There were just a few scrapes on its legs, he says. He now hopes the bird will be reunited with its parents. "Hopefully it will find its way back to them again, Nyberg says.

Carrying a crane is not part of his everyday work. "It was actually the first time I carried a crane, he says with a laugh, adding: "This is one of the more unusual events I have experienced out in the forest.
