Izquierda Unida Launches Race to Pick Córdoba Mayoral Candidate

Izquierda Unida will begin the process on Monday to select its candidate for mayor of Córdoba in the May municipal elections, with the name not expected to be confirmed until October or November. The left-wing party's selection process will be a lengthy one, according to the party. The Popular Party (PP) holds an advantage in this race for two reasons: it formally named José María Bellido as its candidate before the summer, and Bellido has already served two consecutive terms as mayor.

The PSOE has also moved ahead on the left. Antonio Hurtado announced nearly a year ago that he would not continue as spokesperson, retiring from politics. Victoria Fernández is among those mentioned as a potential successor.
