DOJ Deploys Election Monitors to Ensure Free and Fair Elections Nationwide

The Department of Justice said it is deploying election monitors to ensure free and fair elections nationwide, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon. While such monitoring has existed for decades, concerns have grown amid President Donald Trump's unsubstantiated claims of widespread election fraud, including his refusal to accept his 2020 loss. Michigan has been central to those claims; in July, Trump revived a closed probe into fraudulent voter registration forms in Muskegon, where no fraudulent ballots were cast.

The DOJ earlier announced plans to monitor 15 jurisdictions across six states, expanding into November, but did not explain why Detroit, Hamtramck, Lansing, and East Lansing were chosen. Ten Democratic senators sent a letter Monday seeking assurances that monitors won't target jurisdictions in a partisan manner or interfere with voting. The deployment follows Trump administration efforts to obtain state voter rolls, with a judge blocking access to Colorado's data on Tuesday. Key races include a Democratic Senate primary between Abdul El-Sayed and Haley Stevens, and a Republican gubernatorial contest between John James and Perry Johnson.
