Ellison Says He Is Committed to CNN and CBS News Independence

Paramount CEO David Ellison has claimed that opposition to his $111bn merger with Warner Bros Discovery stems from political worries about his control of CNN, not market share concerns.
In a New York Times guest essay published Tuesday, Ellison noted the deal has been approved by regulators in 65 countries, including the United States, and dismissed competitive objections raised by a 12-state coalition and the Writers Guild of America West and East. The issue is whether I can be trusted as a steward of Warner's CNN, Ellison wrote, adding that he has voted for candidates of both parties and holds a mix of conservative and liberal views. The merger, which would combine Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros Discovery, is stalled in a California court after the state coalition sued on anti-competitive grounds. District judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín temporarily blocked the deal, prompting Paramount to hold the merger until trial, potentially as late as June 2027.
