Openai Has Surfaced Text Messages From a Former Apple Engineer Who Joined the AI Startup, Offering a Rare Look at the Cultural Divide
Chang Liu, who spent eight years at Apple as a senior system electrical engineer, texted a former colleague after leaving earlier this year: "This place is crazy… hahahah we use Ai all over the place. In another message, he wrote: "This startup style company is a funny and will be very hard in a couple months😁😁. OpenAI published the messages in a blog post titled "Apple is getting this wrong" as part of its defense.
Apple's federal lawsuit accuses OpenAI, Liu, and Tang Tan—a former Apple employee and current OpenAI hardware chief—of stealing confidential information to advance OpenAI's consumer hardware efforts. OpenAI called the July lawsuit "careless, aggressive and oddly personal, adding, "We do not have, nor want, any of their trade secrets. The texts highlight contrasting AI approaches: Apple CEO Tim Cook has called AI "one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime, but the company offers few details on internal use.
OpenAI's former chief product officer, Kevin Weil, said on "Lenny's Podcast" that employees use AI "a lot, with everyone in ChatGPT constantly for summarizing and writing docs. Representatives for both companies did not respond to requests for comment.
