Their Secret Romance Unfolds As George Pressures Lucy to Marry Wealthy Frenchman Antoine (Edward Akrout) to Save the Failing Plantation
ZayNewsFast. Clear. Brief.
Ellie Bamber stars as Lucy, a 17-year-old Englishwoman sent to her uncle's sugar plantation in colonial Mauritius in 1925, where she falls for Krishna (Mehdi Dehbi), an Indian-heritage field worker. The chaste drama, adapted from Romesh Gunesekera's Booker-nominated novel, sees Lucy appalled by her uncle George's (Rupert Penry-Jones) racist views and the shackles still hanging in his garden. Their secret romance unfolds as George pressures Lucy to marry wealthy Frenchman Antoine (Edward Akrout) to save the failing plantation.
Critics call the lovers saintly and insipid, with Krishna's life barely explored. Prisoners of Paradise hits digital platforms on 10 August.
