A Metro Bank Customer Is Fighting to Recover More Than £14,000 After the Lender's Systems Failed to Stop Fraud Linked to the AI Chatbot

A Metro Bank customer is fighting to recover more than £14,000 after the lender's systems failed to stop fraud linked to the AI chatbot Claude. Zoli Rutter, a businessman from Sussex, had £14,244 taken from his account when fraudsters bought credits for the Anthropic tool. When Metro Bank texted Rutter to ask if a transaction was legitimate, he replied no, but criminals still made a series of payments between £90 and £200. The bank froze his card the day after the scam began, but by then the money was gone.
Metro Bank temporarily refunded Rutter while seeking a chargeback from Anthropic, which later refunded him and banned the fraudster. The bank offered £300 compensation, and Rutter plans to complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
