It Urged Canadian Authorities to Protect Singh and His Family, Step Up Probes, and Hold Those Responsible Accountable

Five UN human rights rapporteurs have urged Canada to accelerate investigations into threats against B.C. Sikh activist Moninder Singh, warning the dangers may stem from Indian authorities seeking to intimidate him over his advocacy. In a nine-page letter released by the UN Human Rights Office, the experts expressed "serious concerns" for Singh's safety, noting police have warned him of murder plots four times since July 2022. The letter said threats appeared to coincide with Singh's appearances before UN agencies, and that such actions "may constitute unlawful intimidation and reprisals" for his cooperation with the UN. It urged Canadian authorities to protect Singh and his family, step up probes, and hold those responsible accountable.

Singh, leader of the Sikh Federation of Canada and a supporter of the Khalistan separatist movement, has been warned of threats on the same day his close friend Hardeep Singh Nijjar received a similar alert in July 2022. Nijjar was assassinated in June 2023 outside a Surrey temple, a killing Canadian authorities suspect India orchestrated. The FBI later disrupted a plot to kill another activist, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Singh received additional warnings in August 2023 and March 2025, and another two days before a February 2026 UN appearance.

No arrests have been made. Singh welcomed the letter, saying India is unhappy with his UN testimony on human rights abuses. Canada expelled six Indian diplomats in 2024 over alleged intelligence gathering, but Prime Minister Mark Carney has since sought to mend ties with India.
