President Donald Trump renewed his call for oil companies to cut gasoline prices, blasting Chevron CEO Mike Wirth for not crediting his administration's support of the industry. Trump's remarks followed Wirth's appearance on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures. On Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The only thing he conveniently forgot to mention is that, without the genius, foresight, strength, and stability, of the TRUMP Administration, the Oil Industry, and our Country itself, would be DEAD!
He added, "As an example, they threw Mike and Chevron out of Venezuela, but now they're back, far bigger and stronger than ever before, expecting to make a fortune! Trump concluded, "That goes for other Oil Companies as well... and get your consumer (retail!) Oil Prices DOWN, NOW! Chevron did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The oil producer has operated in Venezuela for over a century, staying when Hugo Chavez nationalized projects in 2007, while ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips exited. On Monday, Trump criticized major oil companies, including Chevron and Exxon Mobil, for making too much money as he pressed the industry to keep fuel prices down amid tensions with Iran that have lifted global energy markets. Higher gas prices pose a political risk ahead of November's midterm elections. Global oil prices plunged after Trump called off a planned attack on Iran, but pump prices may not follow. Last week's earnings from ExxonMobil, Chevron, Valero Energy and Marathon Petroleum highlighted gains from higher crude prices and refining margins since the war began in February. Valero reported its strongest quarterly profit since the 2022 energy crisis, while Chevron posted its highest quarterly earnings in at least six years.
