The flood tore through the Shuangshimen Scenic Area, a popular day-camping spot in mountainous southern Gansu, on July 26, initially killing 10 people and injuring 23, according to earlier state media reports. Xinhua said the updated toll came as the national disaster prevention commission announced it would oversee an investigation into the event. Shuangshimen is known for its natural stone arches, alpine meadows, and mountain streams.
Videos showed torrents of water surging through a valley where tents and cars were parked. China has faced extreme weather this summer, with widespread flooding. In July, storms in Hubei killed at least 11, while six died and 130,000 were evacuated in Guangxi after dam breaches.
A landslide in Gansu's Dangchang County killed 21 the same month. "a leading global news agency providing fast, comprehensive and verified coverage of the events shaping our world and of the issues affecting our daily lives."
