His Journey Began Five Years Ago During Lockdown When a Friend Persuaded Him to Post About His Edibles Online, With Help From His Nephew
Gerald Stratford, a 77-year-old great-grandfather and veteran vegetable grower, has become an unlikely social media sensation with over 714,000 followers. His journey began five years ago during lockdown when a friend persuaded him to post about his edibles online, with help from his nephew. A viral post about his potato harvest, photographed by his partner Elizabeth, catapulted him from 96 to 9,000 followers in hours.
Now, the former sports club caretaker has appeared on Gardeners' World, in British Vogue, and in campaigns for Gucci and Alexander McQueen. Stratford has partnered with HelloFresh to launch The Curious Kitchen, a free immersive family experience at London's Natural History Museum running until August 30, designed to spark children's curiosity about food from seed to plate. His Cotswolds garden, roughly the size of one-and-a-half tennis courts, features raised beds growing onions, chillies, tomatoes, potatoes, and more.
He emphasizes hands-on learning for children, saying, "Just having a go is worth 1,000 reference books. He recommends quick-growing crops like radishes, suggesting milder varieties such as 'Cherry Belle' or 'Bacchus'. For potatoes, he advises planting seed potatoes in a bucket with drainage holes, yielding enough to feed a family in 90 days.
He suggests the blight-resistant 'Nicola' variety and recommends planting in a frost-free, south-facing spot. For tomatoes, he highlights 'Black Opal' and 'Sungold', noting that buying small plants from garden centres in spring simplifies the process for young beginners."
