A market vendor in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district has been arrested after allegedly hurling a wooden plank at a female customer's head during a dispute over pear selection, leaving her with a gash requiring 10 stitches. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at the neighborhood market in Kulaksız Mahallesi. Nurcihan Yıkılkan was shopping when she and vendor Selahattin Ş. clashed over her handling of the fruit.

According to the victim, the vendor warned her not to damage his goods, saying, "Sister, I sell these to make a living. Don't damage the products. The argument escalated, and Ş. allegedly insulted Yıkılkan before throwing the plank at her head.

Bystanders called for medical and police assistance. Yıkılkan was treated at the scene and then hospitalized, where doctors closed her wound with 10 stitches. Police arrested Ş. on charges of intentional injury, and he was later remanded in custody by a court.

Yıkılkan recounted the ordeal, explaining she was buying ripe pears for her blind, toothless mother. "I told him, 'My mother can't see and has no teeth, so I need ripe ones. He said, 'You can't have them.

I pleaded, but he cursed at my mother and then suddenly hit me. I was covered in blood. Is this how women should be treated?

Don't they have mothers, fathers, and children? Can't we go to the market and buy what we want? she said.
