On Sunday, Mercury hit its greatest western elongation, appearing at its maximum apparent distance from the sun in the morning sky. Over the next few mornings, the planet will brighten, improving contrast against the dawn. An early start and a clear view toward the east-north-east are essential.
From London, the chart shows the view at 04.30 BST on Tuesday. The planet should appear about a handspan above the horizon between 04.30 and 05.00, weather permitting. Binoculars can help, but avoid using them after 05.28, when the sun rises, to protect your eyes. Mars will also be visible, higher and to the east.
