The Continuing Resolution, Which Funds the Government Through Dec

Senate leaders unveiled a bipartisan stopgap funding bill on Sunday that would temporarily block the White House's plan to give political appointees oversight of federal research grants. The continuing resolution, which funds the government through Dec. 11, would halt the administration's proposal only until then, but the agreement makes it harder for Republicans to later support the plan.
The provision emerged from appropriations committee talks and has GOP leadership backing. The Senate is set to vote this week before its August recess. The House-passed version lacks the grant restriction, and the House is already on break. Lawmakers must reconcile the differences before funding lapses at the end of September, and the president would need to sign the final bill.
