Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks Said Authorities Are Confident Williams Acted Alone

The gunman in Saturday's shooting at an In-N-Out restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, has been identified as 24-year-old Chad Williams, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the eatery, authorities confirmed Sunday. At least three people were killed and seven others were injured in the attack, which unfolded at the recently opened In-N-Out in a city of about 56,000 residents, roughly 130 miles southeast of Boise. Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said authorities are confident Williams acted alone.

Among the seven injured, two patients were treated and released from the hospital, three remain hospitalized in stable condition, and two are in critical condition. Authorities said they would not yet release the identities of the victims. One of those killed was an associate at In-N-Out, the chain's president, Lynsi Snyder, said earlier Sunday.

During a press conference, Hicks confirmed that an off-duty state trooper and an armed citizen returned fire at the suspect. "We believe their actions helped drive the suspect away from the scene, preventing further casualties, he said, adding that the off-duty officer and the citizen acted heroically to stop the incident. Hicks also warned of misinformation spreading online, including internet users wrongly identifying the shooter, saying one man named had "no involvement in this incident whatsoever.

Detectives are still trying to determine what prompted Williams to carry out the attack. Hicks said the suspect's family is fully cooperating with law enforcement. "Their hearts are also broken at this time, he said of the gunman's family.

Officials were still working to notify relatives of victims on Sunday. The crime scene remained closed to the public Sunday morning, and businesses in the area, including In-N-Out, Mo'Bettahs Hawaiian Style Food, Swig, and the Twin Falls Visitor Center, were closed. The visitor center said it will remain closed through Monday.

Crisis counselors were made available Sunday for witnesses and those affected by the shooting, according to Lori Stewart, public information officer for the Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office. The FBI has established a tip line for the public to submit photos and videos related to the shooting. Data from the Violence Project shows there have been 202 mass shootings in the United States between 1966 and 2025, killing 1,446 people. Nearly all, or 98 percent, were carried out by men, with a median age of 33."
