Canada Has Become the World's First Commercial Carbon Capture System Integrated Into a Natural Gas Turbine That Generates

A new facility in Canada has become the world's first commercial carbon capture system integrated into a natural gas turbine that generates electricity, capturing more than 90% of its CO2 emissions. Canadian company Entropy announced the completion of its Glacier Phase 2 carbon capture and storage (CCS) project at the Glacier Gas Plant in Alberta. The system, according to the company, is the first commercial carbon capture solution integrated into a natural gas turbine producing power.
It separates more than 90% of the carbon dioxide from exhaust gases through a chemical treatment process while the turbine continues to burn natural gas to generate electricity. The captured CO2 is then compressed and injected into underground geological formations for long-term storage. Entropy CEO Sanjay Bishnoi said the plant will provide low-carbon baseload electricity and sell commercial power to the grid.
He noted that the project marks a significant milestone for the industry at a time when demand for low-emission, reliable electricity is rising. The Glacier Gas Plant houses 11 piston natural gas engines with a combined capacity of about 30 MW, which power compressors used in natural gas processing and transportation. The facility also operates a 15 MW natural gas turbine for electricity generation.
Thanks to its cogeneration design, the plant utilizes high-temperature exhaust gases in addition to producing power. The system uses this waste heat in the carbon capture process. CO2 in the exhaust is captured by a special chemical solvent, then separated, compressed, and injected into underground geological formations for permanent storage.
The solvent is recycled back into the system. The company says the post-combustion carbon capture system, together with previous Glacier facilities, has the capacity to capture up to 192,000 tons of CO2 per year.
