The Worst Segment Lies Between Erpsstağir and the Haukadalsá River

The mayor of Dalabyggğ, Lilja Björg Ágústsdóttir, is pressing authorities to prioritize repairs on a critical stretch of the Westfjords Road, warning that further serious accidents are likely if action is delayed. The road, a vital link to the Westfjords, has deteriorated with deep potholes, damaged pavement, and narrow sections, making parts nearly impassable. The worst segment lies between Erpsstağir and the Haukadalsá river.

Resurfacing, originally planned for spring, has been postponed to autumn, and the speed limit has been cut from 90 km/h to 70 km/h, though drivers often must go slower due to conditions. Traffic has surged since the Arnkötludalur route opened and due to heavy freight for salmon farming. About 70% of local children rely on school buses, and the Erpsstağir Creamery, attracting 30,000 visitors annually, depends on the road.
