Mary Davidson Smith receives 105 cards for her 105th birthday A centenarian in Edinburgh marked her 105th birthday in July in remarkable style, receiving 105 cards from as far afield as Singapore, including one from King Charles. Mary Davidson Smith, a resident at Care UK’s Murrayside care home, said she had a “wonderful time” reading the well-wishes, which arrived after an appeal by the home. Ms Smith also received a card from King Charles, having previously been sent one by the late Queen Elizabeth.

She celebrated with a “wonderful family day” and enjoyed afternoon tea with friends at Murrayside. Born in Korea, she lived internationally during her youth, including periods in England, Canada and the US. She later joined the Royal Navy and met her future husband, British Army officer Charles Wynard Davidson Smith, while posted in Washington DC.

The couple settled in Edinburgh and raised two sons, Neil and Mark; Ms Smith now has four grandchildren. Already planning her 106th birthday, she hopes to celebrate with a “good strong whisky”. Of the cards she said: “This is incredible!

I’ve never seen so many cards, and they’re all for me. The afternoon tea was prepared by the care home’s chef Jose, and upon seeing the meal Ms Smith joked: “I’m glad you didn’t have 105 candles; I don’t have enough breath for that. Asked for her secret to a long and happy life, she said: “I enjoy it – keep on going, adding that she came from a “long line of others that have lived long lives””””
