Minnesota’s First-in-the-nation Law Banning Apps and Websites That Generate Nonconsensual Intimate

A federal judge refused to block Minnesota’s first-in-the-nation law banning apps and websites that generate nonconsensual intimate imagery, allowing it to take effect Aug. 1. U. S. District Judge Donovan Frank rejected xAI’s last-minute request to stop enforcement, saying the company had not shown immediate harm. Frank pointed out that xAI filed suit July 29 — nearly three months after the law was signed and just three days before it took effect.

“Such a delay in bringing the action and the motion suggests that harm is not immediate, he wrote. The case continues; a hearing on xAI’s request for a preliminary injunction is set for Aug. 19. The law, which xAI argues violates the First Amendment, also fines developers $500,000 each time a user generates a nonconsensual intimate image using their products.”
