Guatemala Evacuates Two Villages Near Volcano
Officials evacuated two villages near the volcano, located 35 kilometres (22 miles) from Guatemala City.
The Institute of Volcanology warned of a move toward a more explosive phase, with ashfall affecting nearby communities and hot debris flows posing the greatest risk to western and southern flanks. Guatemala, situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, faces frequent seismic activity. Last year's eruption displaced over 500 people, while 2023 forced around 1,200 from homes. The deadliest recent eruption in 2018 killed 215 and left a similar number missing.
