US Withdraws Proposed Terms for University Funding Compact
The administration has withdrawn a controversial proposal that would have tied federal funding for nine universities to specific policy changes, after widespread criticism from academic leaders.
The proposal, first floated last October, targeted nine universities and drew widespread criticism from university leaders who said it would compromise academic freedom and institutional independence. The terms included banning preferences for historically underrepresented groups, expanding conservative ideas on campus, prohibiting certain student protests, and limiting foreign students. The administration suggested that rejecting the compact meant forgoing federal benefits, which one law school dean called "extortion, plain and simple.
Despite the withdrawal, Kenneth Roth, a Guardian US columnist and senior fellow at Yale University, warns that the assault on education is not over. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has urged universities to post public statements by year-end outlining commitments to reforms on admissions, free speech, and "prioritizing American interests, with no stated consequences but potential retaliation from the administration.
