Smith, Who Endorsed Fellow Republican Al Lemmo, Had About 16 Percent of the Vote
In Michigan's 8th congressional district, President Donald Trump's endorsed candidate, Amir Hassan, is likely to lose the Republican primary to Thomas J. Smith, who dropped out of the race last month but remained on the ballot. With roughly 99 percent of votes counted as of Wednesday morning, Hassan trailed Smith by more than 17 percentage points, according to the Associated Press and The Detroit News. Smith, who endorsed fellow Republican Al Lemmo, had about 16 percent of the vote.
The district, which includes Flint, is highly competitive, and the winner will face incumbent Democrat Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet. The Independent has sought comment from Smith's campaign.
