The Restriction Was Imposed Last Month After Senator Flávio Bolsonaro Shared a Letter Written by the Ex-president on Social Media

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has given the Prosecutor-General's Office five days to weigh in on former President Jair Bolsonaro's appeal against a ruling that barred him from receiving visits during his 30-day home detention. The restriction was imposed last month after Senator Flávio Bolsonaro shared a letter written by the ex-president on social media. Bolsonaro is also banned from using the internet, including through third parties.

Moraes further ruled that the former president cannot receive visits for political-electoral purposes until October's elections conclude, nor can he disseminate political-electoral manifestos through any channel, including via others. In his appeal, Bolsonaro's defense argues that his conviction should not curtail his freedoms of thought and expression. Last year, Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for his role in an alleged coup plot. He later moved to home detention following surgery to recover from bacterial pneumonia.
