Danube's Record-low Water Levels Expose Nazi Warships and Mammoth Bones

At least 20 German military vessels from the former Black Sea fleet have resurfaced near the Serbian port town of Prahovo, some still believed to contain unexploded ordnance. The ships were deliberately scuttled by retreating German forces in September 1944 to prevent capture by advancing Soviet troops. While Yugoslav authorities salvaged some wrecks post-war, many remained underwater due to explosive dangers.

The exposed vessels have drawn attention regionally and online. Separately, researchers in Bulgaria discovered a jawbone, tusk fragments, a shoulder blade part, and a femur with its articular head, believed to belong to a woolly mammoth from the Ice Age. Officials at the Regional Historical Museum in Ruse said the well-preserved fossils, found on the exposed riverbed, were concentrated in one spot, offering fresh insights into the region's prehistoric past.
