Civil Guard Officer Kills Wife, Wounds Colleague, Dies in Asturias Barracks Shooting

A Civil Guard officer shot and killed his wife, seriously wounded a lieutenant, and was fatally shot by another officer at a barracks in Asturias on Monday.
Dámaso, stationed in Zamora, had traveled to Asturias and entered the barracks through a side entrance he knew from a prior posting there. Laura, who was on duty in the office area, died at the scene. A lieutenant who came to her aid was shot in the leg and seriously wounded.
Dámaso, wounded by another officer's gunfire while fleeing, died in a mobile intensive care unit. The couple had three children: an 18-year-old son and 14-year-old twin daughters. Laura was under the Viogén gender-violence protection system due to abuse complaints, and Dámaso had recently been suspended from service and stripped of his service weapon, which he apparently stole from lockers or a colleague.
The Government Delegation against Gender Violence is investigating the case as machista violence, drawing condemnation from the Civil Guard and associations like AUGC. In September 2024, Dámaso had been celebrated in the media for adopting Donald, a retired drug-detection dog he had guided for 11 years in Zamora. The Civil Guard reported that shortly before 1:30 p.m., an incident occurred involving a firearm attack by one member of the force against another.
