The Sydney-london Service Begins in October 2027, Cutting Up to Four Hours From Current One-stop Journeys, With Sydney-new York to Follow

Qantas has completed a decade-long secret project to transform long-haul cabins, unveiling the world's first in-flight "Wellbeing Zone" on its new direct Sydney-London and Sydney-New York routes. The Australian carrier first announced Project Sunrise in 2017, aiming to connect the country's east coast directly to major international destinations. Project Sunrise gave us the opportunity to rethink the customer experience across the entire journey, and the 'Wellbeing Zone' is one of the biggest innovations in the cabin design, Sarah Udy, Qantas executive manager of product and service, told Newsweek.
The Sydney-London service begins in October 2027, cutting up to four hours from current one-stop journeys, with Sydney-New York to follow. Flights use specially modified Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, capable of flying more than 16,000 kilometers (around 10,000 miles) non-stop for up to 22 hours. The Wellbeing Zone is possible due to the aircraft's low-density layout, with just 238 seats across four cabins, the lowest-density Airbus A350 configuration globally.
Each plane features an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank, and Qantas expects to receive 12 A350 aircraft. The initiative comes as airlines like Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa and United unveil next-generation premium cabins, and amid industry challenges including higher fuel costs and a 1.7 percent drop in global air passenger demand in June 2026, per IATA. U.S. travel spending is projected to reach $1.37 trillion in 2026 and $1.42 trillion in 2027. Qantas hasn't announced fares, but Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace previously said tickets may carry about a 20 percent premium over current one-stop services, with one-way economy fares potentially starting around AU$1,600 (about US$1,130) and first-class suites exceeding AU$14,000 (around US$9,885). Tickets for the inaugural Sydney-London flights go on sale in February, ahead of the October 2027 launch.
