Versions of the Bill Have Passed the House Before, İncluding During the First Trump Administration

Congress can still undo one of the Supreme Court's worst recent rulings by passing the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, which would offer permanent status to Dreamers, TPS holders, and other vetted immigrants. The bill is just eight votes shy of the 218 needed for a House discharge petition. In June, the Court effectively allowed the Trump administration to dismantle TPS, and last week about 350,000 TPS holders from Haiti, Burma, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Yemen lost work permits.

Ohio's Republican governor, Mike DeWine, called the move not in the best interest of the United States nor Ohio, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urged an extension to avoid workforce disruption. ICE has also detained hundreds of DACA recipients, including Juan Chavez Velasco, a Texas lab worker and father detained in February 2026 while driving breastmilk to his premature daughter; he was released after public outcry, but more than 170 others have been deported. Gallup polling shows about 85 percent of Americans support a path to citizenship for those brought to the U.S. as children, and 78 percent support one for undocumented immigrants.
