Ncpcr İnitiates İnquiry İnto Meta Over CSAM and Account İssues
The NCPCR had issued a notice to Meta after taking suo motu cognisance of the report, and the company submitted its reply a week later. After examining the response, the commission decided to initiate an inquiry to determine the facts.
IT Secretary S Krishnan said the government will raise issues including lapses in tackling CSAM and wrongful action on prominent accounts during a meeting with Meta's global team, which will be in India on August 5 and 6. Krishnan noted that a company at the forefront of technology should have made its systems work properly. The government had earlier slapped a notice on Meta over CSAM in paid advertisements on Instagram. Krishnan also mentioned concerns about synthetically generated information and safeguards for verified accounts of prominent personalities. Separately, Nishikant Dubey, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, demanded a personal apology from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for the temporary removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Facebook reel, warning that Meta could lose the 'safe harbour' protection under Section 79 of the IT Act.
