Pilgrims Walked the 76-Kilometer Route From Najaf to Karbala Under Temperatures Nearing 50 Degrees

Karbala hosted the largest Arbaeen pilgrimage in modern history Tuesday, as millions of black-clad mourners gathered between the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas. Organizers raised a colossal red banner inscribed with the ancient battle cry "Ya Latharat al-Hussein" (O Avengers of Hussein), dedicated to the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was killed in U.S.-Israeli strikes during the recent war on Iran. The flag transformed the pilgrimage into a public demand for retribution, welding the historical tragedy of Karbala to the recent aggression by Washington and Tel Aviv.

Iraqi officials anticipated up to 22 million pilgrims would enter Karbala, with more than 4.88 million foreign visitors from 172 nations crossing into Iraq by Monday night. Pilgrims walked the 76-kilometer route from Najaf to Karbala under temperatures nearing 50 degrees Celsius, passing red flags hand to hand. Hassan al-Sarai, a 35-year-old pilgrim from Baghdad, told AP he saw countless Iraqi and Iranian flags, calling it a message to Washington that their bombs had permanently fused the two nations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi joined the pilgrimage, saying the ceremony displays the unbreakable unity of the Iraqi and Iranian nations. The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, had praised Iraq's tribes in a July statement, predicting the slogan "Hubb al-Hussein yajma'una" (The love of Hussein unites us) would show its force. From the crowds, Kataib Hezbollah issued a statement rejecting U.S. pressure to disarm the Popular Mobilization Forces, vowing to retain the "weapons of the Resistance" as a sacred trust.

In Tehran, the annual "Jamandegan" march stretched 15 kilometers from Imam Hussein Square to the shrine of Hazrat Abdol Azim in Rey, with mourners trampling U.S. and Israeli flags and calling for swift justice for the martyred Leader and civilian victims, including those lost in the Minab school strike. Over 3,500 volunteer mawkibs lined the route. In Dearborn, Michigan, approximately 45,000 participants marched in the largest Arbaeen procession in U.S. history.

Processions also wound through Nigeria, Germany, Sweden, Kuwait, Bahrain, Uganda, and Canada, demonstrating a global civilizational front. This year's Arbaeen cemented itself as a powerful referendum.
