Hundreds of firefighters, aided by water-bombing aircraft and reinforcements from Romania and France, are working to contain fires northwest of Athens, where rugged terrain has hampered efforts. Deputy fire brigade spokesperson Ioannis Artopoios told Greek public broadcaster ERT that a lack of aircraft for 30 continuous hours caused significant difficulties. Over 1,000 people have been evacuated from Porto Germeno and nearby areas, with more than 250 rescued by boats.

The blaze is blamed on a faulty power line from a wind farm, leading to the arrest of two contractors on negligent arson charges. On Crete, wildfires have threatened villages and resorts, prompting evacuations. Three firefighters have died, including two in a helicopter crash near Psatha on Sunday.

More than 400 firefighters and 21 aircraft were deployed near Kandili and Agia Skepi on Monday. Deputy Climate Crisis Minister Kostas Katsafados noted that strong winds prevented water bombers from drawing seawater. Resident Anastasia Hatzoglou described the devastation to her home and olive trees, saying, It's an awful feeling when you build something with so much effort.
