Local Fire Officials Said Explosions Heard During the Blaze, Initially Mistaken for Gas Canisters, Were WWII Ordnance Detonating

Le Porge Mayor Martial Zaninetti reported over 100 blasts on the fire's second night, describing it as sounding like war. More than 180 homes were damaged. Zaninetti said they were unaware of the munitions depot, noting shells scattered and one even passed through a house.

After bomb disposal teams intervened, most residents began returning home, though access to the ocean beach, campsite, and La Jenny village remains restricted. French media reported the munitions belonged to French and German armies, including mortar and anti-tank shells. The wildfire, which raged for about 10 days and scorched a vast area, is now under control. Evacuees are gradually returning as search and safety operations continue.
