Rogers, Endorsed by Trump, Calls El-sayed a 'Socialist' in Michigan Race
Dr Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is projected to win Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, according to NBC News, though the August 4 race remained uncalled as of Wednesday morning. If confirmed, El-Sayed will defeat centrist Representative Haley Stevens in a contest highlighting the Democratic Party's internal divide, and face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in November to replace retiring Senator Gary Peters. "Whatever happens tonight, we have a responsibility to ensure that we unite, El-Sayed told supporters, "to make sure that Mike Rogers never sees the inside of the U.S. Senate.
His campaign centered on Medicare for All and ending U.S. military aid to Israel, which he called a rogue state. El-Sayed supports Supreme Court reforms, including term limits, and overturning the Citizens United ruling. Raised in Southeastern Michigan by his Egyptian immigrant father and stepmother, he attended public schools, captained high school teams, and earned degrees from the University of Michigan, Columbia, and Oxford.
