Jewish Groups to Meet Tory Candidate Who Served Prison Time for Neo-nazi Abuse
Jewish groups have been offered a meeting with the Conservative Party's candidate for a Somerset seat, Joshua Bonehill-Paine, who spent time in prison for neo-Nazi activity.
The party has faced criticism over selecting him for a seat in next year's election, but leader Kemi Badenoch said she is standing by him to give him a second chance. Bonehill-Paine has described his past views as "indefensible" and now speaks out against extremism. The Board of Deputies of British Jews called on the Conservatives to ditch him, saying the selection "beggars belief.
The party has offered the Board, the Jewish Leadership Council, and Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis a meeting with Bonehill-Paine. Bonehill-Paine spent three years in prison for posting antisemitic material ahead of a planned neo-Nazi rally and was later convicted of racially harassing then-Labour MP Luciana Berger, now a member of the House of Lords. He also has convictions for assaulting a police officer, burglary of a police station, and malicious communications.
On Tuesday, he was selected as the Tory candidate for the new Crewkerne South seat in 2027. Berger said on X that he had published "reams of deeply racist, misogynistic, and pornographic material" about her and that the case "still haunts" her. She added: "Kemi Badenoch you've got this very, very wrong.
